29 November 2015: Birdwalk at Talawe Wetland, Nerul, Navi Mumbai

Winter coincides with migration of birds from colder areas to warmer areas. Therefore it is a good time to watch birds. Under our initiative iNaturewatch we conducted a free birdwalk for Navi Mumbaikars. Talawe is one of the few spots in Navi Mumbai that presents a wonderful opportunity to spot birds in their natural habitat. It is also one of the best places to observe waders also known as shore birds. The walk was attended 19 adults and 3 children who were eager to learn about birds. During the walk participants learnt to identify birds and also got tips on bird photography. The group clocked a sighting of 39 species in short span of 3 hours. They also spotted raptors like Shikra, Marsh Harrier and also the Painted Stork which is listed as near threatened under IUCN red data list. The walk was conducted by Mr. Vikas Mahajan. This initiative was to help Navi Mumbaikars learn about their local birds using our iBirds mobile app and participate in the ongoing Urban iNaturewatch Challenge.
